Governing Board
A Governing Board is a decision-making body established within each school, according to Section 42 of the Education Act of Ministère de l’Education. Governing Boards are composed of voting members including parents and staff members (both teaching and non-teaching professionals) and non-voting members, including community representatives. The principal attends meetings and informs the Governing Board of matters that need to be discussed and voted on, however the principal does not vote. Other invitees are the school board Commissioner responsible for each school, and representatives from Home & School. The public is allowed to attend and time is set aside for public questions during each meeting. All meetings take place on Zoom and the link is provided to anyone who requests it, by email at petes_gb@lbpearson.ca. Minutes are available on the school website.
Governing Boards can:
- Approve activities that propose to alter the school day and/or have an associated cost to parents (examples: Field trips, authors’ visits)
- Adopt operating budgets for the school and SEED program prepared by the principal or SEED Technician
- Adopt plans designed to improve school life (example: Anti-Bullying / Anti-Violence plan)
- Consult on matters that concern the School Board (examples: Principal Selection Criteria, Budget)
- Governing Board does NOT get involved in day-to-day operations of the school, decide on curriculum, managing of staff or student disciplinary matters.
- PETES Governing Board is comprised of 12 voting members- 6 Parent Reps and 6 Staff Reps. There are also alternate members who can stand in for an absent voting member.
